Kim’s Quest to Soothe Her Sensitive Scalp

Written by QV Community

When Kim first developed dry and sensitive skin as a child, her family searched for answers - only to find that there were few answers available. Decades later, Kim’s dry and sensitive skin started affecting her scalp health too. “I’ve had sensitive skin since primary school,” says Kim, now 27 years of age. “Then in my twenties it started to develop on my scalp too.” The most challenging issue of her dry scalp was the itchiness. “When it’s like that, it feels like there’s nothing you can do. It was just an ongoing discomfort.” Kim says she just really wanted to find a routine that worked for her.

Kim has felt somewhat frustrated about the lack of fragrance-free, or soap free options suitable for dry, sensitive skin.  “It appears more so on my scalp, sometimes on my body.” Kim hasn’t seen a health professional about her skin condition for a very long time. “If I scratch it a lot it goes red – it really bothers me during the day, and I think about it a lot.”

“In winter, my skin would get super dry, and in spring, the itching would get worse. I think that’s pretty common, especially with all the changes in the air.”

Kim’s anxiety elevated even more when she noticed the first signs of hair breakage. “My scalp was really irritated – I was always scratching and I was super conscious. It was affecting my hair health.” Kim’s concern led her to trying a multitude of hair products. “Over the years I’ve tried lots of different shampoos.” Many of the hair products Kim used were fragranced, a common irritant for sensitive scalps. Kim realised she needed to start testing hair products that weren’t triggering for irritation or for a dry, sensitive scalp.

Simplifying her routine with a focus on gentle formulations that boost hydration has been a game changer for Kim. “One aspect of my daily routine that I have changed is learning to wash, treat and brush my hair more gently. I used to be really rough with my hair.” For Kim, learning to be gentle means less is more in terms of products – she doesn’t rub or comb her hair roughly, and formulations need to be soap-free and pH balanced.

“Be gentle with your scalp and be gentle with yourself – it takes time.”

Try QV Gentle Shampoo and QV Gentle Conditioner – they have fragrance-free formulas, specifically designed to enrich hair and help hydrate dry, sensitive scalps. Plus, they are dermatologist recommended.

Alternatively, opt for QV Nourishing Shampoo and Conditioner. Formulated with a blend of moisturisers and Pro Vitamin B5 (Panthenol) to hydrate dry and damaged hair, they are also dermatologist recommended, colour free and fragrance free.
