Goodbye Eczema, Hello Confidence! Kate’s Skin Journey

Written by QV Community

When Kate was completing her HSC last year, her eczema-prone skin was playing havoc with her final semester of school. After experimenting with various pharmacy creams, Kate discovered a simple routine that helped her itchy dry skin. Here’s how Kate’s fresh approach to eczema helped to restore her skin — and her confidence.

Kate was a dedicated student, passionate athlete and a social butterfly about to embark on her gap year before beginning university. But in her final year of school the eczema that she’d suffered from since she was a young girl, really flared up. “I got it mostly around my hands, which made it hard to do daily things,” recalls Kate.

Kate’s eczema impacted her confidence in class, and even her willingness to socialise with friends. Kate began to cover the eczema on her hands and arms with long-sleeve tops. “I was embarrassed,” says Kate

"In social situations, you don’t want people saying, ‘what’s that?’, so you try to hide it."

Her itchy dry skin was also taking its toll on her study sessions — and even her sleep. “I recently did Year 12 exams and that was a lot of writing.” This caused her eczema to worsen on her fingers. Due to exam stress and constant itching, Kate wasn’t sleeping well either.

"At night I was constantly waking up itching."

Not only was her eczema disrupting her school and social life, but it was also affecting her performance on the basketball court. “Basketball is pretty vigorous on your hands and sweating makes the eczema flare up more,” says Kate. It became so bad that Kate would have to come off the court for some relief. It was then that she began seeking solutions to soothe her irritated skin. Her local pharmacist prescribed special creams. “They kind of worked, but it just kept coming back.” And the more Kate itched, the more cracked and flaky her skin would become.

But Kate didn’t give up. She found the courage to help relieve the dryness and irritation, step by step. Today, Kate takes a considered approach to her daily skin routine:

  • Emerging Eczema: “If I notice eczema starting to come up, I swap to the QV Dermcare Eczema Daily Wash and QV Dermcare Eczema Cream*”

  • Skin Flare-ups: “For periods when my eczema really flares up, I apply a topical corticosteroid, for times when the eczema gets past the stage where I can’t simply use gentle washes.”

With patience, knowledge and self-care, she reclaimed her confidence, rediscovered her enthusiasm for basketball, and found joy in spending time with her friends again.

SKINsights: What's the difference between Eczema and Psoriasis?

Eczema and psoriasis are both inflammatory skin conditions, but the primary difference lies in their causes. Eczema is often triggered by external factors like allergens or irritants, leaving it red, inflamed and itchy. Psoriasis is an autoimmune condition where the immune system mistakenly speeds up skin cell production, leading to scaly and raised patches of skin. Both eczema and psoriasis are diseases that are diagnosed by a health care professional, and direction on treatment should be made in conjunction with a health care professional.
