Bridget’s Eczema Story: From Covering Up My Skin to Newfound Confidence

Written by QV Community

Preparing for high school can be overwhelming for many students, but for Bridget, it was even more unnerving. When she began developing a rash on her arms and legs, her fears of attending high school grew. Determined to find out what these skin changes meant, she began to search for answers — and the result was heartwarming.

In 2019 when Bridget was getting ready for her first year of high school, she began noticing rashes on her skin.

"It was on my arms and the back of my legs, so I was self-conscious about it"

Recalls Bridget. She was confused about the cause of her newly sensitive skin and wondered what was happening so she visited her doctor to see if she could find out what was causing it.

Bridget’s doctor diagnosed eczema, and with high school just around the corner, the timing couldn’t be worse.

"I was thinking, oh my goodness, people might not want to be my friend"

she says. “People might judge me!” Bridget was also uncomfortable when she had to play sports. “I played netball and basketball and having to wear those short uniforms… made me feel self-conscious.”

For Bridget, a diagnosis of eczema was daunting — she didn’t know anyone else with eczema. Her doctor’s advice was to bathe her itchy dry skin in a special wash. It helped for a while, but her symptoms returned. Bridget was also struggling with insomnia. “I struggled to go to sleep because I was always scratching. It was always all over me and it was a cycle of itching.”

One day Bridget met a girl at school and their conversation turned to eczema — she was suffering from itchy dry skin too. “My new friend talked to me about her gentle skincare routine. It was a lifesaver!” says Bridget. They were both struggling with sport, study and sleep. “Now that I have a good friend with eczema, we understand each other.” Bridget says they bonded over it together and shared their experiences with their peer group. “None of them have eczema, but they understand now.”

Gentle Habits
Try and use gentle body products designed specifically for sensitive, dry skin.

Stress Factor
If you notice certain stressors that make your eczema worse, try to avoid those things too. “Do the things that help you, be confident in yourself and talk to people about it!”

“Growing up has made me realise people talk about it (eczema) more — it’s not something to be ashamed of. Now that it's milder and more controlled, I am not as self-conscious.”

SKINsights: What's the difference between Eczema and Psoriasis?

Eczema and psoriasis are both inflammatory skin conditions, but the primary difference lies in their causes. Eczema is often triggered by external factors like allergens or irritants, leaving it red, inflamed and itchy. Psoriasis is an autoimmune condition where the immune system mistakenly speeds up skin cell production, leading to scaly and raised patches of skin. Both eczema and psoriasis are diseases that are diagnosed by a health care professional, and direction on treatment should be made in conjunction with a health care professional.
