From Tears to Smiles: Anna’s Journey to Soothe Her Baby's Skin

Written by QV Community

Anna’s little girl is a water baby — she loves swimming lessons and splashing in the bath. But her itchy skin was getting in the way of her fun, so mum Anna had to make changes to soothe and protect her bub’s delicate skin. Here’s how she restored that baby-soft feel, making her little one ready to dive back into the fun.

Not even two years old, Anna’s baby girl lights up the room, whether it’s splashing in the pool at swimming lessons or playing at daycare. But not too long ago, things were not so carefree. Baby eczema and itchy skin had slowed down her bubbly little girl’s fun.

Anna noticed her baby’s dry skin from about six months. “She’d get very red cheeks,” recalls Anna. Not only was her baby uncomfortable and itchy, but lots of people would comment on her skin.

“I got self-conscious that I wasn’t doing enough… I didn’t know how to manage it for a long time,”

Anna set about finding solutions to coax her daughter’s sensitive skin back to its baby-soft best. Their family doctor recommended hydrocortisone cream, and while the topical steroid cream worked, it wasn’t a long-term solution for Anna. “I put it on for a day and it would seem to get rid of it and then I’d stop. But then it would come back again.”

Anna says her daughter’s itchy, dry skin was holding her back from activities she loved. “She doesn’t quite understand, so it’s hard to restrict her.” Her baby delighted in her swimming lessons, but Anna didn’t want her skin exposed to the drying effects of the pool water.

Anna found one of the best ways to prevent her baby’s skin from drying out was to choose fragrance-free cleansers and moisturisers made for sensitive skin, and make a few simple changes to her baby's routine.

Bathtime: “We’re now using oil in the bath. Bubbles are fun but have the risk of drying out her skin.” Anna loves QV Baby Bath Oil.

Massage time: After patting her baby dry, Anna uses a rich, hypoallergenic baby moisturiser, like QV Baby Moisturising Cream. “We’ve gone back to massaging her morning and night.”

Spot the triggers: Eczema flare-ups are tricky, but Anna learned to spot what set them off. “When it’s hotter and windier, I know she’s more susceptible.”

Be consistent:

“Whatever you do you need to be consistent.”

Persistence of moisturisation turned things around for Anna’s family. Slowly, itchy nights became restful ones.

While her daughter’s baby dry skin hasn’t completely disappeared, with management and knowledge, it’s easier for Anna to predict when it might flare up and when to step up her sensitive-skin protective measures. The best part? Anna knows she’s created healthy habits that will keep her daughter’s skin healthy through the milestones ahead.
